Marco Baliani in Corpo di Stato

May 7, 2009, 6 p.m.
Corpo di Stato
By and With Marco Baliani
Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò

24 West 12th Street (between 5th and 6th avenue)

www.nyu.edu/pages/casaitaliana/events.html

Descrizione: Un ottimo attore e uno spettacolo forte.

Description:
Actor, writer and director Marco Baliani will be performing “Corpo di Stato” (Body of State), a show on Aldo Moro’s kidnapping, one of the most tragic events in recent Italian political history. The discovery of the lifeless body of Aldo Moro in the baggage compartment of a red Renault on May 9 1978 brings an end to his 55 days in captivity. Fifty-five days that shocked Italy and opened wounds still unhealed. BODY OF STATE is a historical account and an unsparing, open portrait of the generation that split during the crisis of conscience triggered by the Moro kidnapping, but also the story of one man who discovered his vocation in theatre as he lived through it. In his monologue, Baliani reconstructs the story and ruthlessly interrogates himself about his role in the events, driven by a need to understand and confront the meaning of justice and responsibility. The performance moves between two levels: with the great events of national history as the background, the little histories, as Calvino called them, illuminate history with minute but intense tales of life, memory, and lived experience.

In Italian with English supertitles followed by a Q&A with the Director

Roxy Paine al Metropolitan Museum

Roxy Paine on the Roof: Maelstrom
28 Aprile– 25 Ottobre 2009
The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden
Metropolitan Museum of Art

E’ possibile bere e mangiare sandwiches.

Description:
At the Metropolitan Museum, on the terrace at the fifth floor, from April 28th to October 25th (weather permitting) you will find an art installation that is forest and an epileptic seizure. If you never climbed on the museum’s terrace, you should definitely do it now: among the swirling and shiny pipeline, you’ll catch a breathtaking glimpse of the New York skyline. (Marta Mondelli)

From Metropolitan Museum web-site: American artist Roxy Paine (b. 1966) has created a 130-foot-long by 45-foot-wide stainless-steel sculpture, especially for the Museum’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. Giving viewers the sense of being immersed in the midst of a cataclysmic force of nature, Maelstrom (2009) is Paine’s largest and most ambitious work to date. The latest in a diverse body of work, this sculpture is one of the artist’s Dendroids based on systems such as vascular networks, tree roots, industrial piping, and fungal mycelia. Set against Central Park and its architectural backdrop, the installation explores the interplay between the natural world and the built environment amid nature’s inherently chaotic processes.

Beverage and sandwich service will be available from 10:00 a.m. until closing, including Friday and Saturday evenings.

Description: An exhibition on the works of Giotto begins at the Vittoriano (Piazza Venezia) from 6 March. The vast collection is the first important event dedicated to the artist and symbol of the end of the Middle Ages for 70 years. The 150 priceless works gathered from all over Italy are testament to the great influence the Florentine had over his contemporaries and successors. Works are not only limited to paintings as significant space has been made available for his creations in gold, manuscripts and sculpture. From the City of Rome’s web-site.

469 Sixth Aveue
Tel. 212-929 8949 33 E 60th Street
Tel.212-644 8885

Web-Site: www.

Description: “Mr. Philippe Chow was born in China in 1958 and went to Hong Kong when he was 16 years old. Philippe spent 5 years learning all the Chinese basic cooking skills and worked in various kitchens in Hong Kong. Philippe came to the United States in 1979 and started working in the kitchen of Mr. Chow located in Manhattan, New York in 1980. Despite the lengthy working hours at Mr. Chow for 25 years, Philippe was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn and work with some of the best chefs including: Mr. Steven Yim, one of the well recognized ‘Dim Sum’ chefs who had worked for Mr. Chow for 20 years and retired in 1995. Mr. Lam Shak Chug who was also the head chef and kitchen manager for Mr. Chow for 38 years and retired in 2002. Philippe became one of the prominent chefs in 2002 and contributed great success to Mr. Chow as one of the best eateries in Manhattan. Philippe demonstrated his ‘hand pulled’ nooddle skills on one of the network cooking shows in 1999 and was well received by the audience. Philippe left Mr. Chow restaurant in September, 2005 after 25 years.” From Philippe Chow web-site

Tel. 066861877 Via Alessandria 106
Tel. 0644249600

Web-Site: www.lamontecarlo.it

Description: If you want to act like a Roman, you have to eat at least once at La Montecarlo Pizzeria. It’s not so much about the food or the location; it’s about what this Pizzeria means for the Romans. It’s part of the history of the city, everyone sooner or later has spent many nights in this place. Carlo, the boss, is the king of the place: he will greet you like a very old friend or even like you are part of the family. And the photo illustrates enough how crowded it gets. Be sure you’ll make friends… you may even meet someone you know already! Finally, La Montecarlo is the equivalent of a full immersion in ”being-Roman” course.
